Well the starter finally went . Not bad for 37 years of use. How difficult is it to replace? Any tricks I need to know?

This is a 3 bolt operation.
disconnect the batteries or switch to off.
disconnect the small control wire to the solenoid
disconnect the high amp cable to the solenoid
remove the 2 (if memory serves) bolts holding the starter Bendix to the engine bell housing.
The starter and solenoid will fall out.
reverse to install the new starter/solenoid.
provided you have access (yea right!) this should take about 20 minutes.
If you can leave some DNA on the new starter all the better. This is universally considers a great way to gain favor with the sea gods.

on my YSm12 it took longer to pull the cabinet for access then it did to replace the starter. The main problem is the bill for the part was about $450. If I had to do over, I would search the tractor stores for a replacement part.
As per Bill's above post- If you don't bleed on a job, you are not working on your boat.

Had mine rebuilt this year. The local Yanmar mechanic did the job and it works flawlessly. Was a fraction of the cost of a new one which IMHO if purchased may not be as reliable as the original. If this is an option you may want to consider it.

Good luck!

Extra long extension....work from the front

Needed extra long extension to undo the three bolts that hold the unit in place. The extra long extension allowed me to do most of the work from the front of the motor. Otherwise you have to climber over the top of the motor and reach down on the lower right side. I removed the altenator to make access easier and because I replaced it.

Make sure the batteries are disconnected.

Just found an after market starter for my YSM12 at John Deere for $240.00.

At that price I'm grabbing it and having my original rebuilt as a backup (or put back on and hold the aftermarket one as a spare)

Regarding access, I cut the engine cabinet at the battery access which was about a 4" wide section, removed 4 screws holding the panel in place and pulled it out. Great access now and an easy to remove/install side wall to the engine compartment for these types of issues.

Just sayin....
