Hi Gus, use a volt meter to help isolate...

the problem. Your starter battery should have at least 12.5 volts. Same goes for the battery side of the starter solenoid, which in most cases is mounted on the starter. If you have 12.5 volts at the solenoid, but the starter will not spin, use a short cable to bypass it, which should cause the starter to spin. If not it could be a bad starter. If the starter spins then it could be a bad solenoid. If you're not sure take both to your local Pep Boys or Schucks where they can test the unit to determine which part is bad. How many hours does your engine have on it? Terry

Bad ground?

I had a problem on my 1984 Hunter 34 with bad ground. All voltage readings were normal, no problems with any other electrical devices, but when starting I only got a click from the solenoid. Problem ended up being a loose ground on the back of the engine where the whole electrical system is grounded.

Solution might be a relay

See the long thread/post in the "Big Boats" forum. It might have your answers.
