I just purchased a 78 hunter 30. The previous owner told me it has a yanmar 12 horse motor. I was unable to find any model numbers on the motor. I am haveing a tough time getting a starter for it. Everyone wants over $400 for one. It looks like it is a regular general motors starter to me. If anybody can shed some light on where to get a starter or where I can find a model # it would be a great help.

Take it to a shop and have it rebuilt!

Jay: Just take it to a shop and have them rebuilt it. I doubt that you are going to find anything else that fits. These engines were made for tractors and the engine is a diesel. I think that they are probably quite different.

Hitachi starter.

That's about the right price for a new Hitachi starter. Steve is right, there is nothing unique about that starter. Any automotive electric shop can test and rebuild it. There is a very good chance the starter is fine and you are having solenoid problems. Or current loss to the solenoid.

Fix it yourself!!!

Depending on what is wrong with it you may be able to fix it yourself. Does the solonoid click when you engage the starter? If it does then does the voltage drop like, uhh well the starter motor is drawing current? Drop me a line at roosaw@saic.com and I'll walk you through the process. In a previous life I ALWAYS tried giving the solonoid a good rap (don't break it but let it know you are the boss) before I tried anything else. 99.444% of the time it is the solonoid that gets either gummed up or the contacts get burnt and will not pass the required current. Both are DIY items and for $400 what have you got to lose. It doesn't work now right. And when when it breaks down in the seaway you have another skill in your toolbox.
