I want to attach my depthfinder, gps and compass to a panel, which would be attached to the hull, in the normal spot. My thinking is I can drill 4 holes in the boat for the panel, instead of 3 or 4 holes per device. This will get all this stuff to one side, making a nice seatback on the other. Am I worried too much about poking holes in my boat? Can you recommend something cheaper than starboard and less cheesy than plasic cutting board?

Starboard

Starboard is probably the best bet. Look-alike cutting boards will turn yellow in a relatively short period of time. If you want it to look good, sometimes you just have to spend the money.

$20 will probably take care of it

A piece of white oak, beveled edges, bolted to the bulkhead. 5 or 6 coats of varnish. Cost probably less than $20 if you have the varnish left over from other jobs.
