Took delivery of my 356 about 2 months ago. Since day one it has had a slight but noticeable list to starboard on flat water tied up at the marina. Makes sleeping in the aft berth a little uncomfortable. The dealer is still scratching his head about it. Anyone else with the same problem? Any remedies?

Try this...

On a very calm, windless evening/morning. 1. Put a carpenters level in the center of the cockpit, athwartships. 2. Everybody off the boat but you. 3. Untie all of the dock lines, or loosen them until they are so slack that they are almost hanging in the water. Stand dead center and read the level. If the bubble is off center, then you have a list. If your boat really lists there's only one way to fix it: ballast. My dock neighbor has 500 lbs of iron weights somewhere in the belly of his Chris Craft. Don't worry too much about this stuff, enjoy your new boat. I'm just happy mine floats. Paul sv Escape Artist h336

356's list to Starboard

Just about every 356 I've seen that doesn't have a generator has a slight list to Starboard. Mine included. When I load up the Port lazarette with tools, deflated dingy, etc. she levels off.

I'm on the other side

I have a generator and my 356 list to port, I took 200ft of chain I'm not using with the anchor and place it behind the setee to port. It is not leveled yet but it's better... Miguel Azul h356 #195

356 list

ditto for us! we've loaded up the port locker and she's level! I suspect the refrige plus the stove plus the water heater and fuel tank makes the difference on starboard

356 List to starboard

We also have a 2-4 deg list to starboard, which makes sleeping in the aft bunk uncomfortable. To compensate, I will be ordering foam wedges to place under the mattress. The list does not appear to affect sailing performance. I asked both the dealer and Hunter customer service about the list last June, neither knew anything about it. This is the only really disappointing design flaw in an otherwise great boat.

Do they even test the things?

Why, with boats being virtually designed with and moulds cut by computers and built and tested to "high" standards should a $140,000 boat with standard anchoring, docking and safety equipment and full water, fuel, hot water and holding tanks not sit level in the water?

list

My 460 has about a2 degree list to port. All the weight is on the port side. As I have added and improved the boat all additional weight seems to end up on the port side. Aside from that no problems. I think this is just the way it is. John

List

To Paul's test for list I would add having someone move about the boat while you watch the level. My boat (H34) needs one two hundred pound person on the port rail to be level. I think lists to one side or the other are inevitable if attention is not paid to where things are mounted or stored. I have been working away a starboard list on My H34 for a year and am there after moving my battery bank from starboard to port. Why the company doesn't pay more attention to it is a good question and speaks to poor planing.

No List Whatsoever

Just thought I should add that our 356 has no list and that is with or without our dingy engine mounted off center, the "Big Locker" full or not.

All this over a little tilt?

I haven't noticed any list in mine, Hull 265, but with all the rocking in port or moored, I'm amazed anyone could even notice a 2 degree list.

Mine is dead level

I have a big generator in the large port cockpit locker. Also I have big batteries mounted in the smaller port aft cockpit seat locker to maximize the room in the large storage locker. The combined weight and lever arm from the center of gravity to port apparently completely offsets the built-in list to starboard. Ivan Bekey H356#157

a small list may be very anoying

It may be very anoying to have a small list to port if you take a shower and the water runs in the oposite direction to where the shower drain is... soon you'll have water every where....

move the boom

I keep the boom swung to one side to keep it out of the way of boarding and bimini. You can affect list with that big lever full of dead weight sail.
