When we refer to wood as hard or soft it is in very broad terms soft wood generally comes from trees with needle like foliage and hard wood from trees with flat leaves. That is where the terms apply. Some trees with leaves produce very soft wood such that it can be dented with a finger nail and some trees with needles produce wood that will defy a hammer driven nail. Old growth ,high ring count cypress is hard enough for use as flooring in naval buildings.
