I don not have a rule book, but I know that it states that if one's class is not starting one should stay clear of the starting area. Anyone know the number of that rule?

I don't know the rule # but I do know the ettiquette somewhat. If it is not your start that is in sequence then you should defer to any boat that is in the start sequence, whether on port or starboard tack.

Rule 23.1 states that "If reasonably possible, a boat not racing shall not interfere with a boat that is racing."

A boat is racing from her preparatory signal until she finishes and clears the finish line and marks or retires, or until the race committee signals a general recall, postponement, or abandonment.

What Dan said.

We usually also write this into the sailing instructions. Many racers will try to use earlier starts to hone their starting routine. We strictly forbid this and will disqualify a boat if they interfere in any way to the start of another class. Last night I had to wave off a racer who was imposing his STBD tack rights on us after our prep signal. He was kind enough to tack away when asked.
