Hello, I am about to replace the port and starboard stantions on my Catalina 27. I notice that the first two stantions ahead of the port and starboard winches are angled 10 Degrees in. This is a pain in the neck for me. My feet always seem to get stuck between the cabin and the (10 degree in) stantion. My question to you very intelligent people is this. Is there a reason that these two stantions are 10 degrees in or can I replace them with the straight vertical stantions from catalina direct? I am going to call Catalina direct this week but I thought maybe someone on the site would know. It seems the only time I have is in the PM hours and I don't want to talk to the sails clerk. Well have a good night and thanks for your help. Joe Passanisi

Sail clearance

I don't know for a fact but if I were to hazard a guess, I'd say the stanchions were angled in for sail clearance. Quite honestly, I've never been able walk on my side decks & probably wouldn't bother even if the stanchions were straight up. Too narrow to begin with! LaDonna

Suggestion....

First, I would call or Email David Graas at Catalina Yachts customer service for clarification on the desired angle. My understanding is that the stanchions should be as vertical as possible. So take your own measurements. Second, decide whether you want stanchions with a separate base unit or the one piece style. You probably will opt for the one piece type. Third, SHOP AROUND. You can order a variety of stachion styles, custom built to your specs, directly from Garhauermarine for about $35 apiece. Far cheaper than CatalinaDirect. Fourth, make sure you remount the new stanchions correctly. That includes over drilling the holes, filling with epoxy, redrilling the holes thru the epoxy to insure a sealed deck. You can countersink the deck holes just a bit to let the sealant mush down, use 3M 4200 or Life-Caulk. Very important to use a backing plate (or fender washers if the plates don't fit.) The stanchion maker should provide the backing plates with the order. I looked around and found Garhauer the best deal. Custom made from the manufacturer, best price and quick service to boot.
