Stantion caps ... way to apply so they stay?

My 420's stantion caps often pop off the stantion when jib halyard or dock line rubs against them. One problem is that the safety line goes though the stantion too near the top to allow the cap to fit well into the top of the stantion. The adhesive sealents I've used so far are no match for the halyard/line action. Use Gorilla Glue? Any ideas? Jim Dort

Lifelines

I notched each and every one of those cheap caps so they would fit down in the tube better.

Furniture caps

I have the insert type stanchion caps. When I have had them come out, I replaced them with the caps used on the 'feet' of furniture. They go onthe outside and have been easy to obtain and apply.

it's a Hunter trick

They need to be welded on. For some reason Catalina figured this out, but Hunter has not. The benefit, for Hunter Marine, is a savings of about $1.50 per stanchion. The disadvantage, for the Hunter owner, is a $3,500.00 spinnaker torn to shreds because a ten-cent cap popped out during a gybe. Worse yet, it's a crew member with a serious puncture injury because they fell against a capless cookie-cutter stanchion in heavy seas. But don't expect Hunter to come up with any advice as to how to keep those cheap plastic caps in place. After all, Hunter goes the distance.

Now now John!

Mine kept popping out all the time so what I did was. Instead of cutting out a section so that it slides either side of the lifeline I drilled a hole the size of the life line, inserted the plug and then re-threaded the lifeline.

I found that the caps that cover the threaded ends of small propane canisters fit OVER the tops of the stantions very nicely; and seem to stay in place. OK, so they're yellow... add some color to your drab old Hunter. Anyway, just shows you that ... Coleman goes the distance.

Used Stainless caps from Boat US

I bought stainless steel caps, I had to bend 2 prongs so they would go past the lifeline. They stay on very good and look very profesional. I tried some chrome caps I bought at a hardware store. They where completely rusted in about 2 weeks.
