Standup Blocks

Does anyone know where to find/purchase the standup blocks that are used in the mast support at the bottom of the mast? These are the blocks that turn the halyard 90 degrees from the mast to the deck organizer. They don't appear the be "standard" blocks manufactured by Harken, Lemar, Schaefer, etc. Any idea of the part number and manufacturer? This is for a 1995 29.5. It's a little difficult finding them even in the numerous marine catalogs I have. Thanks

I tried!

I ordered 3 of the blocks from Hunter but when I got them they did not fit. I traded one to the dealer that sold me the boat for a working block. I don't know where he got it. I hope this thread comes through because I would like to add blocks for jiffy reefing and lazy jacks. Somebody help us!

Andy, check out the Dutchman

Andy: Before you do the lazy jacks check out the Dutchman. If you check the archives, many former lazy jackers have switched or wish they would have. As far as the stand up blocks they have them in the West Marine Direct 2000 catalog on page 503 from Ronstan. All of the mfg make them. They basically have a mounting plate and the beckette is looped thru the mounting plate with a spring that holds it up.

Same problem-and request..

..as I also couldn't find a major manufacturer of these blocks for my 95' 29.5..with Isomat spars. An additional problem is that the SS blocks shaft are as well as 'welded' onto the cast aluminium mast support plate.. I would be thankfull too for some info on that. Alex.

Mast Base Blocks

The original eqpt mast base blocks on my '94 29.5 are Schaefer. The block swivel pin shaft is threaded and affixed to the mast base with a hex nut. These are not listed in the West Marine catalogue. I broke one a few years ago and I was able to obtain a replacement and one spare from Hunter. If anyone finds another source I'd be pleased to hear about it. Bob Gillan; S/V Far Bugle

If you buy blocks with...

plastic housings, you will not need stand up or mastbase blocks. The regular blocks are fine. Attach the shackle on the block to the mast base or step and let them hit the deck when they droop. Hasn't done damage to my boat yet and the blocks are much cheaper. Yes, I realize this still did not tell you where to find what you originally wanted. Just giving an option.

Correction

Just checked my mast base blocks; they are ZSpar (made in France) not Schaefer. Sorry about that. They are really a strange design though. Difficult to obtain and just as difficult to replace! Bob Gillan

Thanks a bunch

Thanks to everyone that responded - especially Greg!! Now I know that they are "offically" called a Mast Base Block. Already sent an inquiry in to US Spars to find out the cost. This forum is great! Thanks everyone!!! Dan

Always welcome Dan!

I enjoy a bit of detective work now and again. Andy (?) If some one has welded your "mast base blocks" to the mast base, the you've got a problem. I would recommend - 1. Cut off the blocks, re-driil and tap holes, install new blocks. -or- 2 Cut off the blocks and replace with deck mounted stand-ups. -or- 3. Replace the mast base casting and install new blocks. 4. ?? Alex - Welded Mast base

Alex, Going through the rest of these messages (which have been extremely helpful), I also looked at Isomat Spars in the US. They mention about the welded mast base rollers and sheaves. Maybe they could help with your question with the Isomat Spar (I also have a Isomat Spar but it does not have the welded base) . Try looking at www.rigrite.com for info on Isomat. Maybe they could help.
