Standing Rigging

I have a 88 h23 with original standing rigging. I read its a good idea to replace after about 7yrs. If the rigging looks good and there isn't any "meat hooks" should they be replaced. Has anyone ever been dismasted because of older rigging?Steve

I would not replace the rigging if it was not showing signs of fatique. I thing the lifetime of the rigging depends on how often, and what kind of sailing you do as well as how you care for it.

Steve, I happened to be looking for some rig specs when I saw your question. Depending on the environment you sail in, your rig could need service. I would expect a longer life that seven years, but unfortunately, a failure is most often the time when you know that the wire or fitting is bad. There are several things to look for when considering replacing standing rigging. First, is it stretched where you can no longer adjust the turnbuckles down any further and if so, replace. Any broken wires should be replaced without any question. Also, look at the studs where the wires are crimped into the stud for any signs of corrosion. If using rigging tape over the turnbuckle, make sure that water is not trapped by covering the threaded portion and if so, put holes in the tape to allow water to escape. If you try going up a bonson's chair on an 18 foot sailboat mast, It may bend and break which did in my case due to my buzzle butt.
