Good Morning ,

I have a 1980 Catalina 30TR, with all original standing rigging. I bought the boat two years ago, and before that she was on the hard since 1989. Always been a fresh water boat. I am the second owner as the original owner passed away in 89 then the boat was maintained and covered by the original owners family until i bought it ( long story) My instinct tells me that the rigging is fine but I dont want to gamble with my family on the water. I know this is a loaded subject but im looking for some feedback.

Kind regards,

Shannon

the normal recommended replacement time is 10 years...was the mast down all that time ....was it all covered up in the dry .....can you see rust on the rigging terminals or candy caneing in the rigging wire strands...you know that rigging is 36 years old......if you do decide to replace it contact in SOCO South in Largo fl ...they more than likely made the original and by far give the best service and pricing.....

yes the mast was down and covered. There is no sign of corrison anywhere, but I will play it safe and replace. I can replace the backstay and uppers for under 600 . The forestay is new, i replaced that when i installed the new furler.

kind regards,

Shannon

I'm replacing the standing rigging on my 84. Do it now ànd you're good for another 10 to 15 years easy. Best of all you can relax and enjoy those 20 knot days.
Kudos for keeping your family safe.

Interesting that you're only the second
owner of a 1980 boat. We're the second
owner of a 1978 boat. We've owned it 2 years.
Don't know how old the rig is, but a year
ago we were sailing in about a 12 knot
breeze when the port lower forward
shroud gave way, It was the fitting letting
go of the tang. Scary but pretty much
uneventful. Had all the lowers replaced.

Replaced everything on our 78' also. Just needs to be done when they get old.
