Upon pulling my '75 O'Day 27 last week I notice one of the lower shrouds popped 3 strands of SS (3 of 16 I think). What the conventional wisdom...replace all 4 lower shrouds at once, or one at a time when they break or show signs of wear???

I have a 77' 27' - I would recommend replacing all of the standing rigging every 12 - 15 years - depending on use. You'll find at this time of year - most riggers are fairly happy to see some business! Where is the boat?

I second Steve's advice: replace them all. Standard wisdom says to replace the standing rigging every ten years or so, depending on the climate, etc. I replaced all of the standing rigging on my O'day 23 this past spring. If the mast is down, it is easy to do yourself. It is simply a matter of removing old cotter pins and installing the new rigging with new cotter pins. I bought my new rigging from Rudy Nickerson at D

One reason I have trouble remembering is that I also included a couple of other things in the order, so I would be guessing at how much just the rigging was. One thing I do remember is that I got quotes from a couple of other places as well, and Rudy was not the cheapest, but I don't think he was the most expensive either. In any case, no one else knew exactly what type and size fittings I needed. The others needed to know things that I wasn't sure of. Even if he wasn't the cheapest, I viewed it as money well spent on an expert on my boat. If you know more about rigging than me, I'm sure you can put together replacement rigging at a fraction of the cost. I liked the peace of mind I got from Rudy knowing that I got original spec or better material that would fit. Not only that, but I also got personal, rush service at no extra cost. I have bought three "major" replacement items for my boat from Rudy, and all have fit beautifully with no modifications necessary. West Marine may run about 10%-20% cheaper, but I'll take Rudy's O'day expertise.

Inspect them carefully. some may be old and some not. I got mine from Scott Tuma at: Rigging Solutions, 104 Greenshire Dr. League City, TX 77573 (281)705-3712 riggingsolutions@ev1.net I removed the original aft shroud and sent it to him. I measured the foreward shroud to be 3 inches longer. My old shrouds were a miss-match. I believe the originals were size #5 (5/32 inch) but some had been replaced with #6 (6/32 inch). I didn't discover this until later, but the one that partially broke was a #5. so I ordered a pair (fore

Something to keep in mind I guess. Apart from the boat specific peices of equipment, I am more inclined to make or find what I need then order the specifics. This is because I can usually fabricate or find a close replacement for something at under half what a dealer charges for custom work. I'll call Rudy when the time comes, the price will ultimately decide what I will do. If it's close Ill go with the premade, but if I can do it for half the price, I'll make my own! Thanks for the information though, and I'll keep my eye out. Josh

Your boat is about 26 years old. When mine broke, I assumed that I could just order another. The riggers, whith whome I spoke, cautioned that there was no guarantee that the mast was original and might not use the lengths listed in the original boat specifications. I simply went up the mast and and removed the bad shroud (use a halyard to help support the mast while the shroud is off). Then get a replacement that matches the failed part. Jim "Dream Chaser"
