Standing Rigging Dimensions ?

Hi Ken

Diameter is 5mm for all rigging. Do not go bigger. The lengths are
different for each Vega and would be best to change when you get back to
Seattle where you know what can be done.

Hello,
I'm about finished with buying a nice 1976 Vega in Mexico. I'm in Seattle.
I would like to change out the standing rigging which is showing its age a
bit. For one reason or another I have been told it's a lot easier to carry
boat pieces into Mexico in one's luggage than it is to retrieve them from
Customs after having them shipped to the country. I only plan one trip to
pick up the boat and sail her back to San Diego. Therefore I would like to
make up a set of wires to take down with me. Does anyone have any
"reliable" dimensions for the wires? Rather than having the suit of wire
completely fabricated, I'm intending to have one fitting on each wire swaged
in the shop and the wire cut a few inches long. Then, when I get down there
with it I'll cut to correct length and install Norseman fittings on the free
ends. I don't have any data however on diameters or lengths. If there's a
better solution please advise. Thanks, Ken Preston, Seattle area.

Hello: The diameter is 3/16 inch. I'd recommend Sta-Loks over Norseman - I
think they go together easier. Last time I checked, they are cheaper as
well. Brion Toss Rigging in Port Townsend, Wash has good prices on these,
and is a wealth of help as well, including a video on installation. I
purchased mine (sta-loks and Loos rigging wire) from Cascade Yachts in
Portland, OR at a similiar savings. Using them on both ends doesn't cost
much extra. I agree that you need to make up your rigging to fit your boat,
just make sure to tune the rig first, mark the turnbuckles, then drop the
mast and make up the new rigging to match the old, but adjusting the wire
length, not the overall length, so the turnbuckles are half to two thirds
open with the new rig. Things may have moved around a bit over the years,
and no sense recreating a rig that can't be adjusted properly. Check the
turnbuckles well - I had two cracked ones and replaced the lot. Also, and
Steve Birch will second this, check the stemhead fitting for cracks and
bending. I had mine reinforced, and I know Steve was dismasted some time ago
because this fitting gave way. A toggle at the base of the forestay is a
wise thing. Good luck. Bill Bach, V1071

Hi Ken,

You've gotten some good advise here already but I'll add my 2 cents worth anyway d;^)

I would advise taking a roll of wire rope, 5mm or 3/16 inch 316 stainless, long enough to replace all of the shrouds and stays including the split backstay, and enough sta-lok or norseman fittings (I've used sta-loks and prefer them over the norseman type) If you are not certain of the condition of the back stay tensioner (If you boat has one) it might be a good idea to take along a new one as well. Include cutting and measuring tools and when you get down there make up your replacemanent wires. I re-rigged Lealea this way in an afternoon. We re-stepped the mast at sundown and the next morning I cut four inches off the bottom of each of the shrouds and re-installed the sta-loks with new cones because I forgot to allow for the toggles I had added.

It was pretty easy, even for me, so I figure anyone can do it. Even with my mistake it only took about six hours total. I found instructions in a book, This Old Boat I think but it could have been one by Brion Toss. In any case, I posted detailed instructions here some time ago. Find it here Yahoo! Groups

Hielke: The toggle prevents side loads on the fitting and turnbuckle from
distorting or cracking either part. My stemhead fitting showed side to side
deformation from just such a load. So, I think a toggle is a good thing.
Riggers always recommend toggles at chainplates as well, but with the Vega
hoop-type, you have a built in toggle. Best, Bill Bach V1071
