I am having a problem with my vintage Standard Horizon Speedlog. A year ago the display end's water seal failed and the gauge failed due to the water inflitration. I was lucky enough to find a new head end but it had no paddlewheel so I used the old one and it worked fine when tested on the hard, blew compressed air spinning the paddlewheel and got a speed indication.
As I only put it in when racing or longer trips nothing I do all that often, it sat at the bottom of the sink cabinet for a few months. A friend borrowed the boat and put the sender in but told me it wasn't working when he got back. As the boat was scheduled to go on the hard a few weeks later I left it in and figured I look at it after the season, no need to get cold brackish water all over the inside of the cabinet, this was late October.
Frankly I forgot about it till I went and painted the bottom this spring and then realized the sender was in but inserted wrong. It was at a right angle to the direction of travel. I thought this was somewhat strange as its got an alignment tang. Seeing it I remembered what my friend had said and as I was pulling it to paint I just popped it and put inside.
A couple of weeks after launch I reinstalled it for a long cruise. I know I had it in right as the tang was lined up properly as was the wheel when I inserted it, and it didn't work.
I pulled it its turning freely and as I say I spun it with some compressed air while I watched the gauge and get no reading. How does one check these?
I assume while spinning the sender puts out a voltage or a pulse that is then read by the gauge and turned into the speed reading but not certain. I can certainly live with it non-functional, but it would be nice to know speed in the water vs over land to judge current's effect particularly while racing so I could look for places in the bay where the current is less strong to gain a little speed.
Any thoughts on diagnosis would be appreciated.
