I bought one of these radios a few months ago - I particularly liked it for the built in GPS/DSC and waterproof characteristics - makes a great safety radio.

I read the instruction manual numerous times and am confused regarding whether or not it is possible to monitor channel 16 while the radio silently scans the weather channels. It would seem that the weather channels should be muted until the alert tone for extreme weather is broadcast. If anyone out there owns one of these radios and can explain if this is possible and if so how to do it - would be greatly appreciated!

Most radios won't be able to monitor both Ch. 16 and the WX channels at the same time.

However, some of the newer Class D DSC radios have a second receiver and will be able to monitor for DSC broadcasts regardless of what you're using the radio. I don't know if the HX-850S has the necessary second VHF receiver or not. IIRC, in the USA, the second receiver isn't required for Class D certification, unlike the rest of the world.

Mu Uniden VHF has a weather alert function that checks for the alert tone every few seconds. This sounds like a brief interruption when a station is transmitting on 16 (or any other channel). The interruption causes a tiny gap in what you may be listening to while it checks the weather channel. It can be annoying. If it had a second receiver inside, that gap wouldn't be there.

Just got this response from Standar Horizon tech support:

Thank you for contacting Standard Horizon, we appreciate the opportunity to be of assistance to you.

When you put weather channels in the scan memory they will not interupt monitoring the normal marine channels unless the NOAA puts out the weather alert tone. So, you can indeed monitor channel 16 while the weather channels are silently scanned.
