Standard Horizon GX2200 w/AIS ?

I've been researching new. VHFs and find the details in the blurbs/descriptions a bit confusing. One set says that series is "AIS 'capable'" and another intimates that is already onboard;transmit and receive. "Capable" to me means ready to plug in; but not on board..
Anyone here actually have one that can clarify for me, please?

TIA,
Paul

Most of these radios do not (yet) have built in GPS. To get the full functionality of the AIS, you need a couple of things, the radio will take GPS and output AIS. So if you have, say, an i70 display (which I do) you can build a screen that shows AIS. The radio does not talk STng, so you need a converter, I was recommended an Actisense unit, as it's supported by both Ray and Standard. Now the radio gets the GPS from the Ray network, and the AIS from the vhf antenna and outputs the data to the Ray network where the i70 screen shows AIS targets.
(That much is theory, because the boat has yet to be at the coast where some real data is available. Pelicans are yet to be mandated with transmitters :) )
Does that help?

You do have to be careful since the descriptions are confusing. Look at the manufacturer's website for the best description. By the way, I installed a SH GX2200 in the cockpit which is GPS and AIS integrated. Just hook up the power. Nice radio. AIS is handy even though I have AIS at the nav station. About $400. Good luck.

The 2200 has GPS built into it so you don't have to have a separate GPS receiver that sends location to it. I have an earlier AIS Standard Horizon and have to send the GPS location to it. You will not have to do that with the 2200 and is what I would buy if buying now.

You will have to wire from it to a chart plotter if it is capable of showing AIS targets and you want to see them on the plotter.

I do that with OpenCPN as seeing the targets on the plotter screen is way superior to seeing them on the small screen on the radio,

If you are going to display your AIS info on a chartplotter. through a network ... then you don't really need the integrated gps.
If you don't have a network yet installed in your vessel.... perhaps you have only have a handheld gps, and older instruments that aren't compliant...for instance.... then the vhf radio with integrated gps might be the way to go. I must say that reading the AIS display on the radio screen can be a challenge.

I will tell you that it's pretty easy to set things up without a gps equipped vhf radio...
I recently upgraded my boat with a Simrad RS35 and a B&G Vulcan 7 chart plotter/mfd as part of a NMEA 2000 system. Here's how easy it is... you plug both units into the N2K backbone... set the radio to source it's gps from the Vulcan, Set the Vulcan to send and receive GPS info............ VOILA! There's the AIS right on the chart screen..... infinitely easier to read and understand with the chart plotter display than the little dots on the vhf screen.

Hmmm....yessssss....
No MFD. No Plotter,back-bone or system.
At present, only a HH VFHF and Garmin 76-something HH GPS. A small, coastal cruiser, usually within sight of land. The (almost) ultimate KISS boat ;)
I figger IF I am getting a hard-wired VHF; why not get the most function possible?

The GX2200 has the gps antenna in the front of the radio. I was concerned about reception with the the radio below decks. After plugging it in, the gps quickly received a fix. This was below deck, under a metal frame for the winter cover. The gps also drives the DSC emergency calling feature and with an MMSI you can directly call any vessel that shows up on the AIS.
