Last winter, in Maryland, I had life lines seize in 8 stanchions and they will not slide back and forth. First time in 20 years of use. Life lines have been replaced once. Is this a common or frequent problem? What needs to be done? Replace life lines or replace both life lines and stanchions? What can be done to prevent it happening again.

David:

Are you using coated or uncoated lines? I would think that if you are using uncoated lines of the proper diameter, there should be adequate clearance.

Been in the same situation with our vinyl coated lines. Water was collecting in my stanchions and forcing the plastic fill material inside to heave up and pinch the life lines in place after freezing. I used bolt cutters and a hack saw to remove the life lines and then drilled out what was left in each stanchion. This year the life lines come off well before the first freeze. I got the new life lines at http://www.riggingonly.com/ and still used many of the old parts. During this winters lay up I plan to drill weep holes at the base of the stanchions.

I just drilled a 1/8" hole in the bottom of each stanchion so now they do not fill up with water.
I guess the manufacturer forgot!
