crazy came form decking a movie star on set as he kicked in an opening port which another star called me. I did not know the news reporter had taken a picture. the following morning, my daughter called and was upset going to school embarrassed and I told her to go anyway as my picture with my hands around the star's throat was on the front page. The cops who were there stood idle as they knew I was putting the fear of God into that fellow as he had already damaged other boats of mine all because he got mad at the set director and never gave a whoot about about others or property. The cops also knew I would not hurt him. Well he started behaving himself.
As for my daughter, she called that night and said I was "Cool." I kept the name for marketing purposes and it worked. However, I use to make good old home brew peach brandy in them thar back woods of Franklin County, VA for personal consumption. Pretty smooth and yes all the owners and many others from Catalina, Beneteau and Hunter drank some of the good sippin mountain water.
Once I was in front of a Catlaina dealor meeting and sang the meow meow cat redention to Frank Butler. He said I was not crazy but certifiably NUTS. Everyone broke out laughing so hard many still remember that.
The last Annapolis show in 2009, I was motoring the Hunter 27 power sailor with a 75 hp on the back and was challenged. With my nickname, I put the metal to the pedal and came out on plane throwing water on folks, creating alot of wake rocking the boats and docks. I even got water into the Harbor Patrol boat. Well the Harbor Patrol and DNR was after me. I stopped and used my crazy North Carolina twang and was never cited. I will never forget the uproar from the show for that stunt. Yes I do live by my nickname Crazy Dave
