The holding tank vent on my '81 C30 routes through a stanchion on the port side of the boat. But, it appears to be blocked. To pump out the tank, I need to unclamp the vent hose where it goes into the underside of the deck. As a result, it makes the boat stink like... How does the stantion vent work? I can't see how the gas vents out. The stanchion looks solid and the base is sealed to the deck. Please help!

vent

There is a vent hole (or there should be) at the bottom inboard of the stanchion. The system does work if the vent is open. Yours may be blocked. Once you remove the hose you should be able to ream out the path with a piece of stiff wire.

Vent location

On my 1996 C30, the vent hole is on the outboard side of the stanchion about 2-3 inches up. You can squirt a hose at the opening and blast out any debris or in our area small bugs carry mud into any small opening. That might be the problem. Good Luck! Dave S/V Westwind

Cleaned mine out

Steve, I have a Catalina 30 (1985) and have wondered the same thing. I did put a stiff wire through the hole in the stanchion and found that it cleared it ok. The basic problem, I think, is that the hole and line is too small to vent the holding tank. I am looking for a way to increase the size.
