Stanchion replacement

I need to replace a damaged starboard side stanchion and am having a tough time removing it. I have already removed the set screw in the base, but there is a large bolt that appears to go through the aluminum toe rail and into the stanchion base, and maybe even through the base and into the bottom of the stanchion itself. But I can't remove that bolt and so don't know if that is what's making the stanchion impossible to remove. Anyone replaced a stanchion? If so what needs to be done to free it up?? Thanks.

Yes, remove the bolt

I used to have a B285. Your description sounds like the stanchion on it. Yes you have to remove it. The bolt goes into an oversized hole in the stanchion. As a recall, the stainless steel bold/screw bonded tightly with the aluminum toe rail. The head broke off and I had to drill it out and remove with an easy out and large wrench. Good luck. Mark

Thanks Mark

I neglected to add that I have a First 32 from 1984. I just received the replacement stanchion from Navimo and it has the large diameter hole you mention, so that explains my problem. I will try to muscle the big bolt out using your technique as well .. I only hope the drill will be able to handle the stainless. But I guess from your experience it is doable. So thanks!
