I posed a question a few weeks ago regarding the cause of the backup of water from my holding tank into the head. I am attempting to determine if the vent hole in my 1988 Catalina 30 is clogged as some of respondents have been kind enough to suggest. I traced the vent hose to the stanchion where it is connected but cannot see or maneuver my hands to get into position to remove the hose. A very tight spot above a cabinet. by blindly feeling my way it appears as if the stanchion ends in a thick threaded rod with a large nut to which the hose is clamped. Does this rod contain a hole through which the gases vent or is some other mechanism responsible? My main question is what is the quickest and easiest way to remove the stanchion.

Hey Jerry, See the attached link for a picture of the stanchion. They're not hard to remove, but they will require they be re-bed with sealant when you reattach it. Not a big deal, but still a process. If you're concerned that your vent hose is clogged, there's an easier way to find out. Just leave the deck screw-cap (where you pump out) loose or leave it off entirely. If your problem goes away, you know it's a ventilation issue. If you still have it, you probably need to replace your joker valve. Just make sure that you don't leave it unscrewed when it rains. Rainwater might enter in
