I need to replace one of the stanchions on my hunter 28.5 which was damaged in an accident. As you can see from the picture, the stanchion is connected at the toerail and also onto the deck. When I tried to remove the screw holding the stanchion to the deck, it didn't budge. Is this screw epoxied or is the stanchion bolted to the deck? Any thoughts would be helpful.

Thanks - I already sent the stanchion to Bosun Supplies for a new remake. I am still struggling with how to remove the old part that is still attached to the deck. I assume I am going to have to cut the screw with a Dremel and overlay the new part.
Check under the deck to see if there is a nut on the underside. Hopefully there is. Some manufacturers glass nuts into the deck which can break loose if over torqued. Or it is simply a sheet metal screw that goes into the glass and core.
Also make sure you have the correct size phillips screwdriver. I have one that I can attach a 3/8" open end wrench to to get more torque.

Go to Sears and buy an impact driver. It is a tool that looks like a big screwdriver with an assortment of hardened bits. You hit it with a hammer and while under compression an internal spring will rotate the screw. Mine cost about 12 bucks. Very handy tool on a boat with all the seized screws around.

My Hunter 26 has an aluminum plate embedded in the glass. When I replaced a stanchion, I had to use an impact driver to remove the old screws. I also had to retap new threads into the embedded plate because the stanchion replacement did not precisely line up on the old holes. In the same job, I also replaced the bow pulpit. Out of the 10 or so screws I had to remove, about three of them broke off into the embedded plate. Just make sure you have the right size screwdriver like Tim says, because if you bugger up the screw, it makes things much more difficult. BrianW
