Stanchion hardware question

I am working up the courage to tackle the job of rebedding two leaky stanchions aboard my 1990 Hunter Vision 32. I can't see or feel the underside and I was wondering if anyone knows whether Hunter used wood screws or bolted stanchions through the deck?

Doesn't really matter what Hunter used. You should be through bolting them when you rebed them. Use good SS backing plates and pot the holes.

You're right of course, Tim. I was simply curious about what I was getting into before removing the stanchions. It's strange that I can't find their attachment point and I'm looking to make sense of that. Thanks for your input.

Chris: I am guessing that they are secured with machine screws. Just remove one screw and you will have an answer. If you cannot unscrew it, there may be a backing plate. There is also a good chance that there are alum. backing plates.

I think they may be machine-screwed into aluminum backing plates embedded into the deck. Pull one out to check. (Be careful. You may need an impact wrench.) I don't recall feeling any nuts under the flange of my V32. And, I would think twice or more about drilling through to through bolt. Without access, I have no idea how you would bolt one on.

I have a 1990 Hunter 33.5 and have removed and reinstalled all 6 of my stantions. There were machine screws that went into metal plates embedded in the deck. Plates were threaded. It was not dificult to remove them, rebed them, and rebolt them. I think I used a BoatLife sealant (Life Seal??) to rebed them. No problems since then and that was 2 or 3 years ago.

Did you thru drill and/or pot them? How do you know you don't have any leaking into the core?
