Stanchion bases

Good morning. My wife and I recently bought a 2010 Hunter 31.
I owned a Hunter 40 Legend many years ago, but its been a long time since I've been on this forum.
The new boat that we bought has several stanchions that are loose, and I was hoping that someone might be able to tell me how the bases are attached to the deck , and what is involved in tightening them. Are the stanchion bolts inserted into a 'glassed in" backing plate..???...or are they just secured with a nut under the deck....in which case being able to access the back/ bottom of each stanchion to tighten the bolts would be more challenging.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated........and BTW.....good to be back on-board a Hunter again...

Hi Jim and welcome back. I believe the 31 was made from 83 to 87. In which case the stanchions are installed just like my 34 through the aluminum extrusion that makes the toe-rail. In that case, all you have to do is use a pair of channel lock (with a rag to prevent damage to the stanchion body) to hold the stanchion while you tighten the holding nut under with a ratchet under the toe-rail.
But I suspect your boat being a 2010 it might be a 310 model. Then someone else will need to provide the info for you. Good luck.

If it is a h310, I believe there's a backing plate inside the fibreglass like my h326. You likely won't be able to access beneath to put a nut. Next best is to re-tap the thread to next size, either M7 or M8.

Thanks very much Ken. I was watching a video last night about stanchions on a bigger Hunter but it appeared that the owner was able to simply loosen the stanchion bolt and re-bed the area and re-tighten it again. It went a specific video about how to do this but it looked like he was able to do this. I was looking inside my boat and I cant see any way to access a nut beneath the deck without taking down interior walls......and I'd rather not have to do that. It is a Hunter 310. Stanchions held fast to encapsulated aluminum plates if I recall. Just to be sure, send an email to hunterowners and ask that question to be on the safe side. Former Hunter dealer

The old factory is now building mostly pontoon boats and a couple of daysailors only. The former employees of Hunter Marine I knew are long gone. When you dial the 800 number there are a variety of companies but no Marlow-Hunter but only Hunter. Bb
