I want to mount my outboard on the stern rail using a mount like the one shown at the enclosed link. My problem is that I can not find a stainless tee that will clamp on the lower rail. Anyone out there know where to get one? Thanks Mike

You need to find what they use to attach.....

Mike: You need to find out what they use to attach a bimini to a stern rail. I believe it would take care of your problem. You may want to contact Ameriseam and see what they use.

West Marine P/N 279356 That's a 7/8" fitting You're going to have to cut the rail though - or cut the new tee.

You could use an aluminum Tee

If you plan on cutting the Tee with a hacksaw, an aluminum conduit Tee would be much easier on you & the blade. Drill out the threads for the correct diameter before cutting. For a trial, you could remove the threads with a rat tail or even leave the threads in place. If you got real lucky the top thread might be used to connect a vertical SS threaded pipe. I've polished & varnished aluminum, looks good. SS fittings are available for industrial pipe fabricating. Butt weld, socket weld & screwed. These can be cut with a hacksaw. It is easier when using a cutting fluid. Regards, Bob B.

How About a Well Nut?

Or a base cap for stantions and u bolts. The bimmini hardware that would work may allow for too much movement. Well nuts are peices of rubber with a nut or threaded washer on the inside end when they start to get tightend the rubber is forced out and makes a very strong joint. You could use one at either end the down side is you will have to drill a hole in your existing rail. Short of going to a welder this seems like the most elegant solution. If you do end up withthe rail at the welder he can cover the holes and you'll never know they were there.

Looked Them Up

http://www.mcmaster.com/ I would try 7/8" tubing with these: Item # 93495A441 Or you could sleeve 1" tubing to make the inside dimensions smaller

what about

Are you making the mount Mike? if so make two larger pieces that fit over both top and bottom rails, with a channel at top and bottom, or if you are using a store bought mount buy two one for the top rail one for the bottom and fit a length of ss tubing between the top mount and bottom mount

Bimini hinge

The following is from West Marine web site. The picture explains it better but basically, this would clamp to the lower tube and the vertical tube would have a mating end fitting on the end which attaches to this fitting. You could do the same on the top (requiring some grinding on the mount itself) or just use the mount as a clamp onto the top of the vertical tube. These are a lot cheaper at Perfect Fit McDonald in Seattle if you can shop there. I like the suggestion of just using a longer pair of wooden boards though. Cut a groove in both sides to accomodate the rails and screw them together over the rails. It is cheaper too. From West Marine site: Manufacturer Style TAYLOR - 018_543_004_509 Description Two halves slide together and interlock so these fittings can be mounted without disassembling the rail. A single nut and bolt secures the fitting in the position you want. Ideal for installing bimini tops, stringers for fender racks or wherever a rail-mounted hinge is commonly needed. Buy two mounts

I purchased two of the mounts shown on the top rail in your picture. I put one on the top rail and the other (upside down) on the lower rail, with a piece of 1" SS in between. Works great.

Hinged Rail Tee

What you really want is a hinged rail tee. This is much stronger than bimini hardware mentioned earlier and is a cleaner, less complicated installation. Very hard to find, though. Sea-Dog Line makes them and I found some at www.fisheriessupply.com. Do a search of "hinged rail tee". You only need one on the bottom rail, since the motor mount will act as the top one. Radius the inside of the top end of the vertical rail you install with a 1" dia. grinding wheel so it fits snugly against the top rail. This supplier also sells rail tube by the foot, so you don't have to buy the 6' lengths.

Thanks Randall

I did not know that they made these. Looks like a much better choice. Nice discovery for my upcoming project.

Try PVC

Hey Mike, For about 50 cents, I used a PVC tee, the kind that is used for sprinkler systems. I sliced it down the middle, but not all the way. If you score the inside of the top of the tee, you can open it up wide enough to get the tee over the rail, and then you will need only on clamp to hold it in place. Worked great!
