Cleaner/Wax
I, obviously, don't have the worldly experience of L.B., below, but Maguire's 50 Cleaner/Wax works for me. Or you may try an expensive paste named "Flitz" sold at the marine stores.

Scotch brite is alwright!!
Use a green scrub pad, like scotch brite, put the wax { teflon} right on the pad and let dry,. I sail in salt water and my stainless is alwaws GREAT!!

3M Stainless steel cleaner
Several years ago a sailing magazine (I forgot which one) did a report on the different stainless steel cleaners. They also mentioned that stainless needed some chemical to remain clean. Then they listed several cleaners but gave the 3M cleaner the best shot. Said that it not only cleaned but refinished the stainless so that it would hold up well. I have used it for several years and it does do the job. It is not a simple wipe on and off type but with a little elbow grease it does the job for the season. Comes in tubes and cans (not a member of 3M)

Bar Tenders Friend
I have used Bar Tenders Friend to remove stains from my chrome, etc. My neighbor uses SoftScrub. They both work well to remove the stain but you will need to go back over and polish.

Best stuff I've used is made by "Lagostina", the makers of stainless pots and pans. It's called Lagostina cleaner for stainless and copper pots, get it at Sears. You can even use it in the galley!

3-M Stainless Cleaner is great!
I just recently used the 3-M product to clean my swim ladder. It had been left in the down position all season by the last owner of my H26.5, and was quite rusty. The 3-m product removed all the staining, with very little elbow grease. Just wipe on with a cloth, rub for a few seconds and it was completely clean! Plan to do all of my stainless next week!

try Ballistol as a pre-cleaner
You'll probably get lots of good recommendations for cleaning compounds but one suggestion I would make is to try Ballistol gun oil (non-petroleum) as a pre-cleaner. If you spray the Ballistol on and leave it there for a few days it will dissolve any deposits that aren't pure rust. It does well on that funny white corrosion that occurs in Aluminum window frames and spars. It has a lot of other interesting properties too, such as bonding with water to prevent water penetration at threaded joints. (Their link box doesn't seem to work so try: http://www.ballistol.com/about_us_our_policy.html).
