As much as I like the look of teak inside my boat, I'm not a huge fan of it on the outside. The previous owners obviously sanded the grab rails when they refinished them and as a result they were thin and weak. This weekend I finally got my stainless ones installed and the are great. I lucked into some brackets that had a single hole in the middle so they line up with the teak rail from the inside. One thing I did do was to countersink the opening on the deck and install an o-ring on the 1/4-20 bolt that came through. The I-ring was standing proud about half it's thickness so that when it's tightened it should press into the threads on the bolt and into the countersink. They are very solid on deck. I did extend them forward a tad over the stock rail. If anyone is interested I can take more detailed photos. I've also installed 24v 230w solar panel with great results. Next up is replacing the masthead sheaves if weather cooperates this weekend.

They will be too hot to touch in the hot, sunny summer months

cool...

They look GREAT!!!

Too hot to touch, I don't think so... I touch my bow pulpit all the time. Now that you have time on your hands (no more layers of varnish to apply) do something with your ugly rusty life lines. (just kidding:D)

I have the same boat and am interested in hearing more

I have been thinking about this for my boat as well. I was thinking about using the plastic "spacers" under the grab rail and getting them to work with a stainless tube instead of the teak. I dont know if you had the same black stand-off spacers with the wood rail? What did you end up spending on the rails? I also noticed that you have some white tracks/grooves for the companionway hatch. what is the story on them. Finally I am very interested in more pictures of your boat. Thanks, Brent

I had nothing but some urethane between the deck and rail and it leaked. I have about $265 in the rails with hardware. Lucked into a 20 foot peice of 7/8 stainless at west marine. Got 20 brackets at $5 ea on eBay. Then various 1/4 -20 bolts to install. I'll take a few more pics. My hatch slides where broken do I used PVC brick molding to make new ones. I also used the PVC to make new steps for the boarding ladder.

More pics of the parts. The first rail bracket was hollow like the others but my father-in-law welded the front in for me. Don't have to worry about catching a safety line on it now. The brackets were 1/4-28. I re-tapped to 1/4-20 then finished it with a deep well acorn nut to lock it in. Inside I used various fasteners and washers. I also extended it forward 20" father than it was.
