Need advice on a neglect hull. The hull in question is over 20 years old and in several places it is badly stained. By stained I mean that after compounding and trying FSR the stains defy my efforts. In addition I compounded the port side of the hull twice with limited results yes it looks better but the compounding looks uneven and still the stains persist. Is there any chemical agent/compound that anyone knows about specifically designed for VERY tough stains and /or uneven compounding? I don't want to polish or wax without removing the stains as it will be that much harder to try again next season. I am using a random orbit buffer (I don't know how much gel coat is left so I don't want to use a professional buffer/grinder or drill attachment for fear of burning through the gel coat. Any Ideas?

Chlorox Cleanup

I'm not sure what type of stain you are trying to get rid of but I have found that Chlorox Cleanup works better than anything. Simply spray the stain on a sunny day and wait 5-10 minutes then scrub. Repeat process until stain goes away. Tough stains will take several applications I got a big bottle of Chlorox cleanup at Sam's Wholesale. It contains bleach and other surfactants that work well together. I get stains on my hunter that will not remove by anything but this Chlorox cleanup regardless of how much I scrub.

Clorox works wonders!

Our H23 was neglected for a long time, too. I've also found the cleaners mentioned to be better than anything else I've tried (and I've tried quite a few of 'em!). I also tried buffing the Lil' Wass Ett with an orbital buffer. It won't do it! You need more power, captain! If the gelcoat is that thin, then it might be better -and easier- to just paint it! By the way, where's your home port? We ship out of Good Luck Point. If you drop me a line at: ocrc@litenet.net , we can get together & compare notes, or halyards, or beer, or... Give McGuire's a try

I had several stains on the fiberglass that I could *not* get clean no matter what I used or how hard I scrubbed. After a suggestion from a friend I used McGuire's polish. It doesn't contain any wax, it only moisturizes. As I was rubbing the stuff in more and more of the stain would come out. One note here, the buffer didn't work near as well as a cloth diaper & elbow grease. I don't know if this will help your problem, but it did get stains off the hull above the water line. Anyway, you could find a small spot & try it.

Starbright Hull Cleaner

If Clorox does not work, try starbright hull cleaner? If it your problems are those yellow stains it is the miracle stuff. Essentially it is wood bleach and will take care of the stains with little scrubbing. Make sure not to get it on your hands because it dries as little crystals and will give you a BAD infection. You can also pick up wood bleach at the local hardware store. Good luck.

Other things to try

You can also try ammonia, goop off, and simple green. Of course you have to clean off the pervious cleaning agent very well before you put on the next. Some of these things have a nasty side product when mixed. The reason you want to try several different types of cleaners is that the most effective cleaner is dependant on what caused the stain; e.g., diesel fuel, scum from the lake, another cleaner, old age, etc. One may work great when the other don't even touch it. Try them on a little portion of the hull before using them across the entire area to make sure they don't mess anything up. Also, if you do put on a coat of wax and want to remove it straight ammonia will take it right off.

wet sanding

I wet sanded my hull last time it was pulled for a bottom job, stained at the water line as well as from anchor locker drain holes. Sart with 400 grit, 600, 800, 1000 grit. Then compound and wax with a teflon wax. Worked for me.

I second Starbright

I had also had stains that I tried everything on including bleach, rubbing compound etc. Last week I tried the Starbright Hull Cleaner and without any work what so ever they came right out. I'm buying stock in the company!!! Good luck

Starbrite Rules

Starbrite took the old nasty stains off my Hunter 28.5 with incredible ease. The stuff is toxic and nasty, so be careful. I may not be able to have children again, but my hull is clean. Steve: Do you know anyone that can do serious keel work around Lake Tahoe?
