I have decided to step my mast this year and make an attempt to run my new ST60 Wind Plus wire through the mast support post and up through the mast. Obviously I am going to need to splice wire using a junction box or terminal strip. I mounted this instrument last spring at my helm along with three other ST60 instruments. This is the only instrument which doesn't function and which I could really utilize. The wire/cable for the ST60 Wind Plus dead ends on a spool in my starboard lazarette. Has anyone run new wires up the mast or done this on a 1983 H31? What is the best route to get the wire near the support post and are there any tips for getting it up the dado inside the support post to the outside? If anyone has done this, I would appreciate any insight/help/tips etc. Thanks, Greg W. SlipAway

Mast Head Re-Wire
We completed your project this winter, using the existing/previous wire as messenger lines. On the 28.5, we pulled the plain end (w/o fitting) from the mast-head to the base of the mast and then wired the new male coupling. We cut the female coupling from the wire that ran that ran through the mast boot/cabin top and used it as a messenger line that ran to the instrument panel terminal strip. Once we'd assembled all the required wire and tools and thought through the procedure...it took @ 45 ninutes to complete both tasks. The jury rig effort to prove the wind speed & apparent wind direction will function once the mast is stepped again was especially satisfying. Hope this helps.

Greg, I did this on my H31 a few years back. I went from the lazerette, across the back of the engine compartment, through the inside of the rear berth, and then inside the nav station. From there it went up the wall, into the side liner, down the side of the boat inside the liner, and then back down to the floor behind the "closet" across from the head. My speed transducer in the vanity in the head. So I went into there and then finally across the underside of the floor and into the channel in the compression post and out the top. For the run up the dado in the mast I removed the trim on the side of the post facing the head. Drill out the wood plugs and you will find the screws that hold it together. The teak trim comes off fairly easily. This also gives you a chance to inspect the compression post and check for any water intrusion. There is no elegant way to do this. Be sure to seal up the top of the tube that is in the mast step where the wires come through. Good luck
