If you have had the unit for quite a while, most likely you can revive it very easily. All the dust and grit are causing it to grind to a halt.The same thing happened to our ST-50 2 years ago. It was originally installed when the boat was new in 1992. I went up the stick with a can of Sailkote spray. I gave it a good shot in the seams for both the wind speed and direction. Worked it back and forth a bit, and it has been over 2 years now and is still working like new.Give this a try before you take the whole thing down for service. While you are up the stick, you can also coat your sail track on your way down.You can get Sailkote at West Marine.
