FYI rudder sensor fixed my problem. Lots of topics on ST4000 not tracking very well. After changing settings as per Raymarine on Hunter 36, still S all over the place. Rudder sensor was installed, all problems fixed. Abe

That's Interesting

...because of all the 4000's that were installed that DIDN'T have a problem tracking. After all, this is likely the largest-volume mid-size boat AP produced. Wonder what the deal is? Regardless, glad you got yours sorted out and thanks for posting a follow up for everyone's benefit. Rick D.

ST4000 Tracking

My ST4000 is about 4 years old. I've had a problem with it tracking since day one and especially if I'm just motoring and there is no weather helm on the rudder. It does shallow S curves. Pardon my stupidity but how do I correct my "rudder sensor"? Is it a setting found in the ST4000 owners/installation manual. I have a 1981 Pearson 323. Thanks

What/where is the rudder sensor?

What is the rudder sensor? where does it go? I have an ST4000+ and I also have tracking problems frequently. Thanks, Ed

Attn: Phil, perhaps a subject for Expert Forum!!!

I also have an ST4000 that has never really worked right (heck, I don't even know if I have a rudder sensor...how to tell?). I would really love to see someone from Raymarine on this site that can answer questions (as their website has been basically useless)...think I'll move to Navman for my next boat...

Out of Curiosity

I had my 4000 set on 'powerboat' (#3??) when I was powering, which was when I most often used it. I would sometimes go down one when sailing if battery power was an issue. So... how did you guys have yours set? Did you ever try different settings? I know some boats get a bit touchy under power. One I had would round up in a flash. Probably a relationship to prop/rudder difference, offsets and pitch. RD

I had the same problems with the 4000 on occasion even with the rudder sensor. It helps a lot to set the response to 2. It helped even more when I got the gyro stabilized unit (but that is almost as expensive as the autopilot). What helped more than anything was when I got the Max-Prop. Apparently the fixed three blade was producing so much turbulence around the upper third of the rudder that a lot ot the effectiveness was diminished. This apparently caused the autopilot to get behind the steering requirements. With the Max Prop, the autopilot now can hold a steady heading in 30+ knots of wind close hauled. Never could do that before. Besides going a bit faster, this was a bonus I was not expecting. Dan Jonas (S/V Feije II)
