I'm about to install our new ST4000 and am curious as to where others positioned the flux gate compass and control head. After spending a couple of hours on the boat this afternoon I'm inclined to put the compass on the rear side of the aft berthing area forward bulkhead and the control unit just below the port winch handle stowage area. I have a pedestal guard installed but I'm hesitant to go the Navpod route. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

...and control unit next to the companionway. I think the fluxgate is supposed to be nearer the centerline as practicable. Just put it where feet are not likely to kick it. There is no particular reason to mount it on the pedestal. It's not like you turn it on and off every few minutes. Rick D.

Dave, I put the fluxsgate compass on the aft...

berth stern bulkhead just beneath the cockpit steering well on our 1989 H28. I mounted the head on the starboard cockpit coaming where Hunter made provisions for mounting instruments. Terry

Flux Gate Compass

Dave, We had ours mounted low and just forward of the middle of the boat. We have since moved it to the rear bulkhead. Frankly the boat moves around less back there and so there is less wandering induced from the flux gate compass. We also added the Raytheon gyro stabilized unit. That has made a large difference in the stability of the system. The 4000 control head allows you to do many things, including small to large course corrections, auto tack, plus track to a waypoint with the right gear connected. I would mount it on a navpod at the helm to provide convenience for those inputs. Dan Jonas (S/V Feije II)

st4000 fluxgate

our dealer originally mounted the fluxgate under the steering cover in the cockpit of our 356-didn't work right at all! we've moved it to the port bulkhead under the nav station, and that seems to be fine-mount it as near to the centerline, as low as possible, but away from large magnetic masses-engine, mast support pole, etc. Dan-more details on the gyro, please, I'm thinking about the same thing to improve radar overlays!

Gyro Plus

Chuck, The Raymarine part number is E12101 (Gyro Plus). It is pricey, but I think it will help performance considerably. So far, we have completed the install and went out yesterday and did the linearization, calibration, etc. I also reset the radar chart overlay synchronization. The radar is tighter, but frankly, it was not too bad before. Keep in mind, I had a seperate high speed compass feeding the radar, so I did not expect the Gyro Plus to make much difference in the radar. I uninstalled that compass in favor of the Gyro Plus. My main effort was to improve the performance of the autopilot. There was not enough wind to sail, so autopilot performance under sail is yet to be quantified. Under power, the course keeping of the autopilot was tight and response was swift. More so than without the Gyro Plus. The installation was pretty straighforward, but did take more than a few hours. It is not just a case of inserting the unit between the flux gate compass and the autpilot head, although that is part of it. Radar overlay synchronization is output on NEMA so that connection has to be made back to the Pathfinder. I'll try to remember to post the post sail testing once I've had time (or wind) to get that done. Dan Jonas (S/V Feije II)

Thanks for your inputs gentlemen - they were appreciated. I think I'll temporarily place the compass and controller as per my original request and go for a trial run. If I'm not satisfied with its performance I'll try a couple of other locations. Dave Winiker H31 "Champagne on Ice" P.S. This web site is awesome. I found an old long lost friend and Hunter owner that I haven't seen or heard from for 10 years.
