My new 2002 310 Catalina to me has a ST4000 Autopilot. I did the deviation but the unit sends me the NO DATA message. Sometimes it works. I checked and replaced the cable connections. If I put a srewdriver next to the compass it responds immediately with changes but the compass will then stay there. Any idea what I need to do? I got the setting on North and 50 Latitude. Wolf

no data message ?

Your post leaves me wondering if the no data message is the result of no communication with the fluxgate compass or with gps. If I recall correctly, when pushing the track function, if no gps communication is available... then this message results. I've never experienced the message for any other cause. Could you clarify if the message is when attempting track mode or is it displayed at other times?

NO DATA 4000

We have no GPS and do not use the track function. The NO DATA comes up on AUTO mode no other features selected. Once in a while the compass works and I push AUTO sometimes it takes over for a moment most of the time it displays NO DATA Wolf

Wind instrument connection

According to the Fault Finding section in the manual "NO DATA" means a weak signal from the GPS or Wind trim data is not available - check the connection to the wind instrument. If this isn't the problem call Raymarine. These have excellent technical support. Hope this helps. Vancouver was my birth place and I miss it.

Take a look inside the fluxgate compass

RayMarine has commented to me that they have occassionally had too large of a build up of silicone on an internal assembly of the fluxgate compass and it would interfere with free movement. It's simply to take the cover off and inspect for free movement. I'd also do a double check that nothing ferrous has been stowed near the compass. Last, the small electrical connectors used on the control head are a bit tricky because the male portion is recessed. I once got intermittent operation from the gps and discovered that the female connector rather than embracing the male... was wedged between it and the plastic housing.... worked good for several years but finally loosened a little.

Ohm test

NO Data means that the ST4000 is not seeing a compass when going into auto mode. About 80% of the time, this has been a fault in the ST4000 itself. You can test the compass by removing the 5 compass wires from the back of the ST4000. With an ohm meter set on the 20 ohm range, you should have the following readings on the compass cable: Red - Green = 3 to 5 ohms Red - Yellow = 3 to 5 ohms Green - Yellow = 6 to 10ohms Screen (bare) - Blue = 6 to 10ohms If correct, the compass is probably ok. Hope this helps! Trevor
