our ST4000 autohelm give a "low batt" error after about a minute. The batteries are new, a 12v start battery and 2 6v Trojan T-145 house batteries. The batteries all show 14v, and, according to the ST4000 manual, you shouldn't get the "low batt" warning until voltage drops below 10v. There is no sign of corrosion on the electrical panel breakers, and everything else seems to work OK.

a bad connection will cause a voltage drop...

This would seem like a low battery to the auto pilot.

I get the same thing

I have replaced the batteries, terminal connectors and I get the same alarm. The only connection I haven't been able to clean is the connector at the wheel and motor. The connectors are recessed. If you find a cure for this please let me know. Paul

voltmeter

Try using a volt meter to find out what the actual voltage is at the power input wire at the autopilot control. It sounds like a bad connection to the unit itself.

Wire Size...

If you use too small a gauge wire, there will be too much voltage drop from the source to the unit. It sounds like this may be the problem. Measure the voltage at the source and at the unit. If the difference is greater than 3-5%, suspect the size of the wire. Steve

I may have found the problem........

when I disconnected the drive wires from the back of the unit, I found that it did not "error". I reconnected the wires and got no error, but, I got no drive either. Again I pulled the drive wires, and I noticed there were nicks in each of the two wires, right where the black shielding cover ended. Either the wires were nicked when the cover was cut, or the heavy plastic cover rubbed through. Of course, no one has the small crimp on ends that are used. Im going to cut and solder them. We'll see what happens. Raymarine said to send the unit back for repair. I've never heard of one being repaired. Usually you get to replace it with the ST4000 MKII for $650 or so.
