ST4000 auto pilot

I have a 2016 Catalina 310 with a ST4000 autopilot. When the autopilot is in Auto mode, it occasionally disconnects from my Axiom chart plotter. If I smack the side of the ST4000, it reconnects. I'm sure there must be a voltage drop or a loose connection somewhere. Does anyone know the location on this boat for the the ST4000 computer and Flux-gate Compass? I want to check and clean all my wire connections.

There is no computer for an ST4000, it's all in the control head, what is sometimes called a "dumb" pilot. Fluxgate location dependent on installer, but that's not your problem. Somewhere is a Seatalk to Seatalk ng converter because your pilot is Seatalk and Axiom is Seatalk ng. It's probably in the navpod with the CP or the instruments. It has a power plug and device plugs that may be loose.

What do you have against reading the manual ? Available ANYWHERE on the net or in our archives. If we don't say this at least once a day, it's a rarity !

and Flux-gate Compass?
As far as the location of the compass goes, search in the centre of your boat in a protected location. At the risk of repeating myself, check the manual. You may have already seen it and not know what it is.

Thanks for this! I will open up the navpod and check for loose connections.

I did check my manuals and documentation that came with this boat. The location of the Flux gate compass is not mentioned other than a general "near the center of the boat" I still cannot find it. Thought I would post here and ask. So sorry to have disturbed you. I did find some useful responses to my question form others and I'm grateful.

In all fairness, I think he was referring to your question about the “computer” which of course doesn’t exist for this unit.

You certainly didn't disturb me per se, it's just that we see so many people asking obvious questions when a cursory look at the ON LINE manual would factually answer their question "according to the manufacturer's instructions."

Pretty obvious where and what the computer is with a glance at page iii. Your chartplotter doesn't have the software to read the ST 4000+ input and then compute an output to the servo motor at the wheel. Only the ST 4000+ control unit can do that. The control unit is the computer to which you refer.

As for the compass, that's more than a bit of a bugger. Mine is buried at the very bottom of a hanging locker against the forward edge and you do have to look closely to find it. All I can suggest is a closed off space in the middle. I don't even want to say this but maybe take a look in the bilge for an elevated surface.

After working on a repair job on my ST 4000+, I learned that it is a fairly old model autopilot for a 2016 boat. There are several newer models since my 1999 model Autohelm ST 4000+ model in my 1999 new boat from he factory. If you are the second owner of the boat, there is a possibility that the previous owner may have got his hands on an a second hand 4000+ and installed it. Not knocking the 4000+ for a split second here. Have had mine for 24 years and flawless performance. Did a minor rebuild of a couple of broken posts in the drive unit last year and it still performs flawlessly. Several people here have described the older 4000+ model as superior construction compared to the newer units.

What I'm getting at with reference to a previous owner having installed the unit, you could be looking ANYWHERE on your boat for the location of the compass and not according to the manufacturer's instructions of near centre. Any chance of getting down and dirty and getting behind the control unit and tracing the wire leading to the compass :

................. as a last resort ? Good luck.

Lou, What most of these guys did not answer was that the install manual tells you generally where to put stuff, but it is really up to the installer to find the right place. I have the S1 and my computer is mounted under my Nav table, the fluxgate compass is in the aft stern locker on centerline right under the helm and I have the rudder sensor installed. The Raymarine autopilot setup is very flexible and you may just have to follow the wires.

And, doing an RTFM is just overrated. It is always more fun to wing it first.

My compass was located on aft berth bulkhead in space between the bulkhead & transom. Was positioned close to centerline & a short wiring run to the control head instrument mounted on the helm station. The fluxgate is a round black plastic hockey puck looking device that is approximately 3-4” in diameter. As others have mentioned, it’s often mounted in an inconspicuous location. It is possible you will find a loose or corroded connection; however, it is also possible that the control head / instrument is failing. My control head failed & I had to upgrade to the new Evo-100 pilot; same wheel unit but totally redesigned course computer, compass, & control instrument.

Yes I did. I did a diagnostic on it as recommended by Raymarine. I believe it has some bad sectors. I just purchased an EVO-100. Hopefully it will pair better with my Axiom.
It will! I have the ev-100 and Axiom 7. Great combo.
