ST40 Troubleshooting

I have a ST40 Speed which has decided knot to tell me how fast I am going. The Tech support from Raymarine tells me to check continuity between the "green" wire and the "shield" however their manual does not indicate which wire is the "shield" and have not heard back from Raymarine yet. Anyone here know what wire is the Shield? Or any other suggestions? The paddle does turn freely and the instrument powers on indicating the temp but no speed.

Thanks Alan for respondins so quickly...I have printed the manual off their website and now that I've done the search on "shield" I see that it would indicate that there is a shield around the various coloured wires. Next time I'm up at the boat I will check this out. Just waiting for my bung to come in order to perform the test.

Shields are normally the only bare wire emerging from any cable, they are often a single core wire or are a pigtail made up from twisting the woven braiding of the shield.

The 'shield' is also more frequently called the 'screen' - like on your TV antenna cable.

Thanks Donalex...I'll have a look at the cable and verify that a shield is there.

dholland, Donalex is right.

And don't feel bad, you're not the only one confused by that term. You'd think that "shield" was equivalent to "shielding" and that you were looking for some thin aluminum foil just inside the jacket, wouldn't you?
