ST30 Speed Transducer

I have Autohelm speed and depth instruments on my 290. Recently the plastic speed transducer literally came apart as I was cleaning it. There are two plastic pieces, (formerly) held together by apparently nothing more than a wire; when pulling the transducer out, the first piece came while the second remained lodged. If anyone has had this problem, I'd like to hear about it, but that's not the point of this post. I've contacted Raymarine to no effect. Since I don't want this happening again, I was wondering about replacing the plastic one with a bronze transducer. I was looking over the owners manual and it referenced using the bronze transducer with wooden hulls. (now this is where a little information goes too far...) Has anyone replaced their plastic transducer with a bronze one (presumably because the bronze one will last longer than two seasons)? And the reference to the wooden hull doesn't preclude me from using it on my 290, right? Any help would be appreciated (particularly if several have had this happen and have thoughts about the plastic transducers). My thanks in advance.

Option to speed measurement---GPS

I could never get a comparable speed as provided by my GPS. If I set the Autohelm unit to my GPS reading while on a starboard tack, then the port tack would be off. Same thing would happen if I set the port tack speed to my GPS. Now I just use my GPS!

GPS and Speed Transducer are Both Right

Dave, GPS measures speed over ground. Speed transducer measures boat speed with respect to water. If there is any current (and there always is) it will cause the two to differ on different tacks. In addition, the speed transducer must be calibrated per the manual. But back to Paul's original question. I'm surprised Raymarine wasn't more helpful. I've had a plastic speed transducer for 5 years and no problems. Try calling them again, and see if you have better luck with another tech. Sounds like a defective unit, worthy of replacement.

no trouble

I have 2001 290 and take out my transducer all the time and it never came a part. I also get different readings from my gps and the knot meter on different tacks at times depending on the current.
