Struggling with stepping and sealing my keel-stepped mast(H37C) this Spring has me reconsidering going out the Erie Canal. Have any of you made the St. Lawrence passage? How many days to some Atlantic coast port like Cape Cod? Is the sailing difficult? Can you recommend a good book? Thanks. :)

St. Lawrence

Ed, It has been many, many years since I did the Seaway, but I seem to recall about five days from Toronto to Quebec City. After that the St. Lawrence is tidal and progress can be fast or slow, depending on how much you ride the tides. Some opt to go down the Richelieu to Lake Champlain and on to New York. (this would involve unstepping the mast...) Take three weeks and come on down and round the Gaspe to Nova Scotia... and visit with a couple of your Maritime H-37C buddies (I've got a guest mooring)... then Downeast Maine, then...it would be quite a sail all in all! Great photo!

Thanks Jim, for the offer and the great photo. Good friends just returned from a bicycle vacation up your way and loved the area. Is the mid-boom traveler original or an owner modification? Your comment about currents is a concern for me. My 1979 H37C has the 2QM20 Yanmar, the 20HP. I am considering a repower but maybe a 3-blade instead of the folding prop would work. Otherwise the boat will be ready. Year after next maybe. We think we will spend our first retirement year exploring the Great Lakes. What time of year is best? We were thinking of starting the journey in early May.
