February on the St.Johns
We launched our 260 at the public ramp at Palatka's Riverfront Park on Feb. 10 around 1100. After clearing the U.S. 17 bridge we encountered heavy chop, wind NW at 20 gusting to 30, and decided to run for the west bank's shelter at Crystal Cove (Log Landing). We waited for a predicted cold front to pass on the 11th and then sailed from Crystal Cove to Green Cove Springs on the 12th.On the 13th we left GCS at 1100 arriving at Doctor's Lake and Whitney's at sunset. We spent the 14th looking at new Hunters at Whitney's. (This may have been a mistake, as the wife's impression of the 36 is that it "has a real bed.") We walked to Gene's Seafood restaurant for Valentine's Day dinner. On the 15th fog had rolled in. We left Whitney's in the fog and sailed compass bearings from daybeacon to daybeacon as a training exercise, continuing N to the I-295 bridge, then turning S and returning to GCS.On the 16th we left GCS early, clearing the Shand's bridge by 0900. This was our best day; winds started out SE at 5, then shifted to W, 10 to 12. From daybeacon 25 to daybeacon 33 we had several YEE-HA moments approaching 5 1/2 kts over ground against river and tide current. We tied up that evening again back at Crystal Cove, because I did not want to load the boat onto the trailer after dark.On the 17, we sailed the short distance back to Palatka and trailered the boat, arriving back in S.C. upstate around 2000.All in all it was a great trip.
