ST 60 speed reads zero??

I have a full compliment of ST60 instruments on a new boat. There is a RL70 Ratheon radar with SeaTalk. My bottom is cleaned monthly. I have removed the transducer and the wheel is clean. The SeaTalk cables are in place. Why does my speed through the water read zero? One time it read about half that of the SOG via GPS before going to the zero reading? Any ideas? Thank you, John Richard s/v Jack's Place

ST60 Speed

First, take it out and make sure that it spins freely and registers when you spin it by hand. Sometimes little things grow way down around the spindle part of the wheel. Takes quite an effort to get it clean. If it does not register when you spin it with your hand, then it is a problem in the transducer or wiring or display. If it does register, but still does not work when moving through the water, it might be obstructed with something in front of the wheel on the bottom. Next cleaning, have the diver pay close attention to the area in front of and around the sensor. then sail it right away and see if that helps. Ours gets mucked up really fast. Within several days sometimes. When we have trouble getting it going, we just put it on SOG and leave it. Wish that there was a way to set it up without a wheel. Heard a rumor that Raytheon was working on this, but have not heard anymore since. Dan (S/V Feije)

ST60 Speed problems

I have this instrument on my Catalina 320 (one year old). It, too, has been disappointing in performance. First, I've never been able to get a decent calibration. For some reason, the procedure in the manual for calibrating to (GPS derived) SOG just doesn't seem to work very well. I tend to just turn on my GPS and read off the SOG directly from it. Second, I've had paddle wheel fouling problems. Both flora

Dan, is right

Look like it has to be cleaned. Get the plug and then try to clean it as best as possible. It should spin real easy, like a rollar blade wheel.

The wheel is clean and spins freely

While the wheel is in good shape, I will try the suggestion of manually spinning it to see if there is a reading. John Richard s/v Jack's Place
