hello all.
1. my speed transducer is finally finished. anyone have a spare they are willing to part with?
2. or does anyone know if the st60 transducer will fit the through-hull. Raymarine says know, but has anyone else done this. Being 40' I dont want to have to hull out just for a through hull switch.

You might be better off calling Airmar, as they actually make most of the speed transducers used in the marine world.

I relocated the ST50 speed log on my boat from the stbd side bow location the factory installed to centerline 18" forward of the keel stub. When I did this I installed a self sealing thru hull. When I remove the log a flap closes blocking the vast majority of water from entering the hull. The log is removed every time I leave the boat which keeps the paddle-wheel clean. The centerline location insures accurate speed readings on opposite tacks.

I replaced my ST60 transducer in the ST50 through-hull. FWIW, My ST50 boat speed went bad and I thought it was the transducer but it was actually the display that went bad. Long story short - I now have complete ST60 system (transducers and displays) except for the depth transducer, all cables, and through-hulls which all are ST50 vintage.

For fun (I'm such a geek...), I bought a dead Airmar speed transducer at a flea market, mainly to take apart. This one apparently failed because the transducer electronics, which are potted in epoxy or similar, had been potted in two different operations, and the circuitry broke at the gap between the two "pours". The paddlewheel magnet was fine. I was actually able to salvage the Hall-effect magnetic pickup from the epoxied blob, and restore the transducer enough for it to be used in a home-brew speed-log.

But I digress... jdgrnt66 how did your transducer fail? If it's just because the paddlewheel or axle are worn out or fouled, you might just have to replace those bits.

All those paddle wheels and stuff are obsolete now. GPS. You can get apps for i-phone that give you that info and more

Not really. Sometimes, knowing STW, which only a paddlewheel or other through-hull transducer can give you, is helpful. A GPS can only give you SOG.

I agree. When sailing here on San Francisco Bay and other major tidal areas, it becomes very helpful to know the difference between STW and SOG. It really helps in learning where the back eddies are here on the Bay. You can pick them up only by being able to compare the two.

All the paddles are there and it spens, display just shows 0.0. I have all the other toys, gps, chartplotter and love the sog. however sailing here in tampa bay in light air with tidal cuurents and flying light tri radials and assemets, stw is needed to compute apparent wind speeds. Whend cruising, only sog counts anyway.
Also Aimar says that the that the st650 insert will fit the old thruhull. This is now available from blue heron marine part # 31-275-5 for $79.95
