Plan on installing a st-4000 autopilot on a 336. My question is, Do you need to install that metal rod or can you use the motor housing to hold the ring from spinning? Thanks in advance, David

Sorry,

You need to fasten the metal rod to your pedistal, that is what allows the autopilot to work!

Maybe

I installed my motor into a tight hole cut into the pedastal. Secret is to cut carefully and keep it snug. Could not figure out a way to install the rod. I saw this on another boat. It works. Dan Jonas (S/V Feije)

I take it that your autopilots are on a 336 also? David

on a 336

We bought our 336 new in 1997. The first upgrade was to have the dealer install a 4000 autopilot. He cut a hole in the pedistal at about the 4 o'clock position for the motor. No rod was used. He did line the hole with some leather-like material. We've had zero problems with the installation, sailing the boat about 1,000 miles a year.

To all of you guys...

Tha answer here, I am assuming you also have the autopilot working... I do too...But mine, when no connected or disengaged, goes smooth only in one direction. In the other act, sound and feel like there is a gear broken or jamming inside the housing. Anybody had similar problem and, anybody open the housing for that or any other reason? If so, how? Any buried screws, can opener, etc? Excepting for that, the unit works great. Is like having an extra crew member aboard. Thanks for any info! Aldo S|V Isabel (Hun 27) alozano@monmouth.com

Never mind you guys...

I did pop open the housing (no hidden screws!) and found out one of the two idle wheels that help to keep the belt in place against the gear actually is mounted on an excentric allen key secured shaft. A minor adjustment corrected the tendency to jam the belt in one direction. Unit work fine after that...

David, No mine is on a 290, but I saw the similar installation on a 340. I assumed, maybe incorrectly that you wanted to know if you could use the motor housing in place of the rod. The answer remains yes, if it is installed correctly. I think this is a common problem in many Hunters because the pedastal is large and is very close to the wheel. I also suspect that my solution is a common one. I would not suggest doing it this way if the pedastal / wheel distance caused the motor housing to penetrate the pedastal near the end of the motor (Away from the gear end). To my way of thinking, in that situation the turning force would put to much load on the connection between the motor and the wheel mounted portion of the autopilot. Sorry for the delay in the answer...I also was out sailing all weekend.
