My ST 40, only two years old, now displays only dashes. The manual says either the face of the transducer is fouled or the cable is bad. The transducer is mounted inside the hull in an oil bath so fouling is not the issue(hull is clean). I wanted to know if anybody knows a way to test the cable by maybe taking readings with an ohmeter across the terminals, before I go through the trouble of pulling it all out and purchasing a new transducer. I have sent an E-mail to Raymarine, but I am sure they will be eager to sell me a new transducer.

Sent to raymarine

I sent my meter to ray marine for testing it good so they said they did offer a good deal on new one,but if I had to do it again I would run some test with ohoms meter checking to see a break in cable maybe, ask raymarine how to test the tranesducer. nick

Tech Support Hell

I have an ST60 Tridata and when my depth display went to dashes I attempted to get information from RayMarine so that I could do some simple troubleshooting and make an informed decision as to how to proceed. They would tell me only what is in the manual i.e. reset it and said if that didn't work my only recourse would be to return the control head to them for repair. They will not give you info that will help you to repair your own unit...good for the dealers and repair centers, bad for people in urgent need. So I asked around and did a little research and was able to fix it myself. When this unit does eventually DIE I will replace it with another brand......when my ST4000 shorted out at the control head and fried the circuit board I replaced it with a Simrad WP32 because of the antics of the RayMarine out of warranty repair center. Too bad really, they have good products that I would like to use but due to my experiences with their tech support I will always seek out other manufacturers for my needs.

Raymarine repair

Hi Denis - While Raymarine does handle many repairs of their products at headquarters, they also support many dealers that offer service as well. I'd ask Raymarine where the closest servicecenter is located. I work for an authorized Raymarine servicecenter in Seattle and we try to find the fastest/cheapest solution for customers - I would expect others to do the same. Best of luck, Trevor

oil bath resevoire

I suppose you are CERTAIN that ‘the oil’ bath hasn’t been compromised?

Is it clicking?

Denis, I think I have the same setup as yours. Is the tranducer still making the clicking noise? I can hear mine when out of the oil. Mine had no readings the first time I installed it & I found that there was no oil (or an air pocket) between the unit and the hull. I put a rubber washer ring in the bottom of the cup to keep the transducer slightly off the hull and it started working. One other time it gave me dashes and I switched the unit off at the breaker for a few minutes & turned it back on. It worked fine after that. Hope this helps- good luck. Bob
