I am Setting up my 84 hunter 31 for cruising and am installing a SSB Radio. I am looking for recomenations on an antenna for the boat. I have a split backstay and can insulate it but I am looking for other alternatives that others have used.
You will want to research to determine the minimum desirable length of your antenna. Any I've seen have appeared to have been longer than the upper or lower portions of a backstay on a boat of your size. You may be able to use one of the lower side stays or have to use an upper. If you can use the back stay, that will be preferable as it will be easier to route the cable through the stern railings into the cabin than having to drill through at a mid ship location.
There is also a new SSB antenna out on the market. I don't know anyone that has used it yet, but Gordon West has endorsed it and he is the guru on radios. The antenna is made by Gam Electronics and it basically snaps on to your backstay. Nice thing about it is that there is no need to cut your backstay.
in addition to it being alot easier to install compared with backstay modifications, it is independent of the rigging should anything catastrophic happen when you are cruising
