When pumping the handle on my Jabsco, loud squeeling results.......can I lubricate down the handle shaft, or do I need to remove the cover and lubricate the seal? With grease? Thanks.

just give it some oil

All it requires is to pour some cooking oil or baby oil or some head lubricant into the bowl and pump a few times.Lubricating should be done regularly to extend the life of your seals and pump parts.

Cooking Oil

Once a week, or more often on voyages, I put a couple of cups of vinegar down the head and flush it through. Then I follow that with a couple of cups of cooking oil and flush that through. That seems to lubricate the flapper valve and the vinegar minimizes the calcium buildup. Have been doing this for years. I keep large plastic containers of both cooking oil and vinegar handy in the head cupboard.

Big nut

The Jabsco has a big plastic nut where the pump handle goes through. Undo this and lube the o ring at the bottom of the pump, also a bit on the shaft. I use dielectric grease and do this once every week or two. Dumping any type of oil in the head should be discouraged especially if you're on a holding tank .

I use a little vegetable oil

It doesn't take much, a few teaspoons once or twice a week.

A couple of CUPS of oil???

You're wasting all but about two tablespoons...the rest is ending up in the holding tank, where it puts a lovely "oil slick" on the surface that makes odor a lot harder to get rid of. There's a much easier way to lubricate the toilet than the never-ending battle of pouring oil down it every week or two...and it only takes about 10 minutes every spring as part of recommissioning: buy a tube of thick teflon grease, available at any bicycle shop. Remove the top of the pump...depending on the age of your toilet, that requires either removing 6 screws or loosening one hex nut. Put a HEALTHY squirt of the grease inside the pump...pump and few times to spread it all over the inside of the pump cylinder. Put the top back on. You're good to go without any need for any additional lubrication till next spring. Or, you can keep large jugs of oil onboard and pour some down the toilet every week...your choice. But I'd make it mineral oil (baby oil is mineral oil, btw), not vegetable oil, 'cuz mineral oil won't turn rancid in the summer heat. Btw...vinegar doesn't do a thing to lubricate a toilet. A cupful flushed all the way through to the tank prevents sea water mineral buildup in the head discharge hose.

Just bite the bullet and...

lube the seal, like Peggy suggests. It's easy and you will be SO glad you did. The oil things gets old quickly.
