I am replacing some interior panels on my 1978 37' ketch. There is a trim around the panels made out of naughahide (sp?) sewn around rod. I'm not sure what the stuff is called, one boat yard guy called it "squeek joint". Does anyone know where to get more of this stuff? Is it still made / used? Hopefully the picture I took off some of the old stuff will help. Thanks, David Hall

Squeek Joint?

David, Never heard it called that before, but I guess it's as good a name as any and maybe that's what all the shipyard people call it. I don't know. But on Supersonic Aircraft (F-14) we used to call it gap filler. Only there it was the tubular rubber overcoated with a tough Dacron like fabric and was used in seams where the aircraft flexed. I'm sure they didn't hear any squeaks...LOL! I wouldn't want to price that stuff from the government though. It would probably cost as much as your boat..LOL! As for the naugahide covered stuff, I had the same stuff on my Citation and I didn't really like the look of it. I think this might be one of the areas where Irwin "cheaped out" and used it to dress up his joinery. For what he was building, it was good idea. (Fast, cheap, and it could hide a lot of mistakes) But when I replaced my cabin sole last Summer I removed it and replaced it with real trim work. I'm probaly going to continue doing that in the rest of the boat as well. It just looks so much better and the panels no longer look like they were just thrown together. As for where you can get some to replace yours, I'm sorry I can't help you. I never looked into that. Perhaps an upholstery shop?????

It's called Gimp

This joint filler when used in Van conversion is called "Gimp". I also have removed most of mine and replaced with improved joiner work.
