Have fresh water cooled A-4 on our Cat-30. At low/idle rpm get a squealing noise like a loose fan belt. Tightened and lubed both belts; no help. Noise is intermittant. Could this be the impellar in fresh water side pump rubbing on housing cover? Seems I heard about this some time ago and fix was to install two cover gaskets for better clearance. Anyone had this problem with their A-4? Thanks for your help.

Check Moyer's Site

I believe it has to do with the drive shaft that runs the pump and that alternator. They recommend a fix for it, but it looks a bit time consuming. Please let us know what you find out, in any event. Too many people find a fix to their problem and never report it. Best Regards, Rob (link below)

Moyer Marine repair

Rob; Thanks for the direction. Talked with Don and it sounds like accessory drive bearing. Awaiting new fuel tank anyway so good time to replace unit. $85.00 for a modified unit is not too much compared to a spun main bearing. Thanks again. Bill Heaphy

Let me know how it turns out...

I may need to do that myself, as I get a little squeaking at start up, and I am pretty sure it is from the accessory drive. Any info you have on how easy it was to install, or anything else is greatly appreciated! Best Regards, Rob

Alternator?

It could be your alternator bearings going out. check it first by removing the alternator belt & see if the noise dissapears.

Todd - good diagnosis

That is exactly what I thought it was at first, and it may still be. The tech tip on Moyer's site said that if the accessory drive starts to go, it sounds just like an alternator squealing, but then it goes away. Hard to isololate since they are so close, so I don't know which is which. So - I think it's time to replace and retension the belt anyway. We'll see if that fixes it or not. Best Regards, Rob

Squealing A4

I have had the same (I think) problem for many years, and after trying everything I know or heard of, I now believe it to be a critical speed and the noise emanates from the shft and prop and is apparently not unknown in the Catalina. The noise occurs only at one narrow speed band and will cease whenever you run above or below that speed #2301 Draco

cutlass bearing

I had the same problem with my 1983 c30. This past spring I replaced the cutlass bearing and now the squeal is gone.

Louis - tell me more about the squeak..

I have that type of squeak too, and my mechanic said it is the cutlass. I am scheduled to have it replaced later this month. Can you tell me how much you paid, and how many hours it took? Any additional info would be greatly appreciated.
