I have not dove down an checked my through hull to see how clean it is, but if I unscrew the strainer and open the through hull, I get a good gush of water into the bilge. That being said, the last time I started the engine I heard a squeak from it for a little while and no burping from the exhaust. After a little while the squeaking stopped and the burping started then became a good flow. I decided to start the engine again yesterday and the same thing happened. The engine is 1 year old, and has 96 hours on it. I have adjusted the belt, but have not replaced the impeller yet. (That is what I suspect more than anything else.) Opinions and guidance pls. 1. Do you think I am guessing the correct answer to the problem? 2. On a 2gm20, is replacement of the impeller something I should watch a mechanic do then do myself from then on, or is it an easy thing for a mechanically inclined person?

Very straight forward change of the impeller ... dont forget new gaskets. When you open the cover plate of the pump housing, notice the way that the impeller vanes are .... just duplicate that 'attitude' when you replace.

What is the problem?
With water lift mufflers it takes a while before water starts coming out of the exhaust. If you're getting a good flow there's no problem with the impeller. Replacing an impeller is a fairly easy operation if there is good access. On the 2GM20 it shouldn't be a problem. As for the squeak it's most probably the belt. Either the alternator belt or the belt that drives the impeller. If anything goes wrong with the impeller you won't hear a squeak. You'll get a hollow sound and no water from the exhaust. Just one thing
When you take the water pump off the GM2 series to access the impeller, be sure to reattach the alternator fan belt correctly. It's all too easy to forget and leave it around the shaft instead. Trust me.

Changing the impeller
As a side thought, "grease" the new impeller with a light coating of liquid soap. (This will also ease the job of replacing the new impeller in the housing). Then watch the water outlet after you start it.Bubbles will appear. The soap will lubricate the impeller and judging from the sound (if it's present) you may be able to determine what is actually squeaking.

Sounds like the impeller, but the average impeller should last several years, not just one year and less than 100 hours.

...but I don't know ANYONE who tries to get seven years out of an impeller. Everyone I know changes it annually. In addition to that, I keep a spare onboard. Changing your impeller every year (or at least every other year) is cheap insurance. Cheers, Bob

Tighten in Star Fashion
When you teghtre the impeller plate , do it in a "star" pattern. Yanmars usually have 6 screws. After they are snug tighten one softly (The metal is soft) then go to the opposite side. Do the same procedure until they are all tightened/snugged down.
