The geese are starting the spring migration. Saw a flock heading north this morning and the local ones have been paired up for a couple of weeks.

The geese have been flocking here in southern PA for week or two.

Thought that I saw a robin the other day. Could've been wishful thinking, or maybe a cardinal in an overcoat.

the Swans have been gathering on the Susquehanna River out from my home for the past few weeks. When they start to show in large numbers and other ducks and Geese then I know it's not long till sailing season.

Saw a loon all dressed up in his courting clothes today. They hang around Alabama until late spring but the mating feathers are a sure sign of spring. Today was not spring like. Cold rain and fog. We sailed a few hours and actually had a few minutes of good sailing. But it was cold and we called it a day about 4:30 and dropped the sails. There were a lot of fishermen and that is another sign of spring. There were hundreds of cormorants in large flocks hopefully they will go and eat northern fish for a few months. For some reason I like Loons but don't care too muc for cormorants. Maybe because there are so many cormorants around especially in the winter. Only a few groups of loons.

A saw the first robin of the year in Bethlehem, PA on Friday morning. Although it could have been that cardinal in the overcoat who flew up from Havre de Grace. They can be sneaky you know!

Many robins have been here for a couple of weeks, the geese are flocking north and today I fired up the iron genny! I left the boat in the water all winter and, this being my first winter to own her, wasn't sure if I had properly winterized. She ran fine so now I am relieved and can start putting sails back on, etc. SPRING!!!! DON'T YOU JUST LOVE IT!!!!

Spring???

That depends on your latitude. North of Boston its still Winter The trees are completely bare There are still clumps of frozen snow on my lawn Birds! sure plenty of seagulls thats it. Around here we have a saying The first day of spring and the first springlike day are not the same Its 36 degrees damp and overcast. Thats definitely not spring.

The first signs of spring are subtle and you must learn to recognize them. The oaks that hold their leaves all winter start to drop them, the snow melts on the south side of the cedar trees, The woodchucks start coming out for a brief look, the wild garlic starts to show on the lawn, the birds start pairing up, sometimes at night you can hear a fox yap for a mate. If spring arrives properly it just kinda tip toes in and the willows start to show some green, the buds on the maples just seem to be more there. Then one day you see a pussy willow near a stream or you are walking in the woods and kick the skunk cabbage. You might find that you are starting to track mud into the house for the first time since late fall. All signs of spring sneaking in silently.
